Bedřich Matoušek was born on June 3, 1965 in Mariánské Lázně (today the Czech Republic). He spent his childhood in various orphanages and moved in with his mother into the ‘Pentagon’ housing in Bratislava when he was 12. He lives and creates in the House of social services in Rozsutec in Bratislava-Lamač. His favorite subject matter are the various celebrities he admires and that he re-draws from the shiny tabloid covers. He basically creates their ‘portraits’, and includes the tiniest details of their faces. Béďo, as everybody calls him, spends hours on them. Concentrated, patiently working with a magnifying glass, he creates fragile structures that attain a certain dream-like quality upon finishing. Besides human portraits and figures, he draws and uses segments from various surprising advertising and other promotional materials. Most of the time, he works with hard crayons or pencil. He avoids expressivity and vivid colors, as well as contrast. Strange, faded colors make his paintings nearly meditative. Other Bedřich’s hobbies include hiking and while on his nature walks he observes various details, such as flowers and life of insects.
